Tutorial Thursday: Plush Owls

/ Thursday, November 11, 2010

After my birthday party, I had some inquires on these lovely owls I made...

In my version, they're a tad bit bigger... I looked at the picture and took it from there. I can't find the blog where I found it from... I thought it was from here, but didn't see it come up. Oh well. Here's what you'll need:

1 fat quarter sheet - more than enough, depending on how big you want it to be
1 sheet of brown felt - for wings and legs
1 sheet of red felt - for the mouth
sewing machine (or could do by hand) with contrasting thread
white embroidery thread
2 sets of buttons - for eyes and wings

I made my own pattern by looking at the picture and sized it appropriately. I put it on a piece of paper first, cut it out, and made two of everything (except for the head and tummy felt pieces). I then sewed the felt "head" & "tummy" to the fabric.

Using white embroidery thread, I hand sewed the button eyes. I also sewed the red mouth. I then took both body pieces (right sides facing together) and sewed them to make the body - keeping the bottom open to put the batting in. I turned it right side out and stuffed away... I like my owls fat. This is the tricky part... using pins, I lined up the bottom with the feet & sewed directly across. I'm sure there is a cleaner way of doing this, but hey, time is money!

I finished up by adding the wings... What I would recommend doing is faux sewing the buttons using the embroidery thread AND THEN hand sew it to the owl. Hope that makes sense... ask away if it sounds confusing! =)

Happy crafting!
