Project 52: Week 4

This picture always makes me laugh. This was taken a year ago during Marc's 30th birthday session. Karen crashed our session for a few laughs and fun. There they are, folks. My two best friends. Completely goofy and completely themselves. It's hard to have them each a five hour flight away from me - in opposite directions. Marc lives in Hawaii and Karen lives in NYC.

Karen visited LA last week & we spent some quality time together... having coffee, breakfast, and even a little FaceTime (we're kinda addicted). I had a moment last week while we were talking... a little "whoaaaa..." moment. We've known each other for over 16 years now. 16. And, I wish they were here. To hash things over cheese fries & to call at 3am just to talk. Or fun sushi dinners at Yamashiro resulting in an impromptu trip to Vegas, just because. Not much has changed since we were younger and they really understand me. Really. And, they are always pushing me forward...

Capturing: Regina, Angie, & Jasmin - A Family Session

I don't know what I would do without my mom. Her strength through the toughest times and laughter through the funniest bonds my family together. She's remarkable. When Angie approached me to shoot a portrait session for her mom, Regina's, milestone birthday, I felt honored. She wanted to capture her mom's beauty, her strength, her smile. Her remarkable-ness. Oh, and it gave her a great reason to spend a morning with just the girls.

The Tinkerbell Half Marathon has arrived!!! eeeeeeks! I'm excited to be running through Disneyland again. Unlike last time, I plan to stop and take pictures with the Disney characters along the way. I'm looking forward to having a great time with my running buddy, Trish, and realllllly enjoying the marathon. Especially the yummy lunch after! I can't wait!

Until Sunday, I will be resting and relaxing. I need my energy for the 5:45am call time --- yowzers! Wish us luck and send good vibes!

My First Pot Roast

I promised myself to cook more this year. While grocery shopping last week, I purchase a pot roast. It was on sale, it sounded yummy, and I figured it would be simple to make. I've been following the Pioneer Woman for over 4 years and remembered she posted a recipe a few months ago. Inspired, I looked up Ree's pot roast recipe and made some alterations. I used beer & water instead of wine & beef stock. Ohhhhhh and I've always dreamed of owning one of these...

I considered purchasing a Le Creuset pot but it was just too pricey. Plus, the lovely yellow color did me in!

Onward to the ingredients!

After searing the veggies and roast, I added the beer & water and spices...

Then, off to the oven it goes and the three hour wait begins... a three hour tour, a three hour tour... sorry, but it did take three hours.

And the wait was well worth it...

I decided to serve it with mashed potatoes and salad...

The boyfriend agreed to the yumminess and went back for more. SUCCESS!

Project 52: Week 3

Last week, Stephanie of Celebration Portraits & I finalized our trip to WPPI. I.AM.SO.EXCITED! I learned so much last year it was a no-brainer for me to go this year. I am at such a different place with my business and WPPI helped me so much. Trust me, there are many things I still need to do and I'll get there in time.

My objective this year is to take classes primarily focusing on the business of photography. Simple enough, right? Well, there are many classes to offer and choosing a few is so difficult. I also want my trip to be relaxing. Every time I've been to Las Vegas in the last three months has been pretty stressful, so this time, I want to just eat and be merry.

The countdown is on! I can't wait! If you're a photographer and going to WPPI, let me know! I'd love meet up with you and chat about anything and everything.

Capturing: Chase Turns 2!

I remember when Chase was born... I went to visit Anna & Paul in the hospital after an early dinner. They insisted I hold him and I did after a little hesitation. See, I loooove babies but Chase was born a wee 6 hours or so before. He was so new and I was a little scared to hold him so soon. But, those feelings went away quickly... it was hard to let him go! Now, he's 2 and so adorable! He loves to run around and play. I love seeing him do his thing and capturing it too!

This week was awesome. I feel so accomplished and rested (for once). I have a few projects up my sleeve I'm so excited about! I can't wait to share! I'm managing my time a little better & remaining positive. It's hard to balance everything but I'm getting better at it. Unfortunately, my closet is still a mess. It took a back seat to the priorities on the list. I've gotten some great advice from other bloggers & friends - THANK YOU! - and I hope to get to chip at it soon.

Meet Marcy

Marcy and I met in college and have been close ever since. Throughout the years, we spent hours talking about our individual goals - both big or small - and creating a "battle" plan. After our chats, I felt more at ease with the decisions I was making and the path I was embarking. That's what I love the most about Marcy - her unyielding support and encouragement in all my aspirations, especially with my business.

It is no surprise she chose a career guiding and educating students on their own professional goals. And, now? She's taken it another level. She decided to provide her expertise and guidance to assist those in their career pursuits. Aside from offering a list of great services, it's really her approachable-ness (yes, that's a word!) that sets her apart.

I think I can, I think I can...

Bring it, 2012... brrrrrrring it. I signed up for quite a few running events this year and I'm excited. So far, this is how it's panning out. Now, before you think I'm crazy or anything, read my running story here. My plan is to take June off for recovery, i.e. yoga and cross training. I will then go back to my lovely team and lead for the remainder of the year. EEEEKS!

Project 52: Week 2

One of my goals this year is to organize the madness. I'm pretty organized but when it comes to my closet, I'm inconsistent. When I worked in a retail store, I would color coordinate, "board fold", and stack shirts, sweaters, etc. in my closet. I would also separate my hanging items by color, type, etc. It was pretty crazy. Since then, I've fallen out of sync and my closet is a little out of hand. Maybe it's due to my internal battle of impulsively purchasing dresses and cardigans (yes, I love them too!). The picture above reflects the first half of my closet. The other half looks about the same - cramped and alllllll over the place.

I promised myself 2012 will be different for me - starting with organizing what I have and getting rid of the clutter in there. I started by doing a little research and created a battle plan for this week. I scoured pinterest for ideas and asked friends. I am very fortunate to have such organization-savvy friends! Capturing: Andrea & Joseluis Engaged // Pasadena Engagement

I am amazed with the connection my couples have with each other. They connect on a level only they understand & I am a mere observer. They share inside jokes & giggles as a snap away. They do goofy things & I love that they let me capture it because really, this is part of who they are. Andrea & Joseluis are no exception.

They met on common grounds - with a love for working out & staying healthy. Andrea approached him at the gym. He was smitten - I mean, why wouldn't he??? - and the rest is history.

Feelin' Print-y

Dresses found on Anthropologie (dress 1 &3) & ModCloth (dress 2,4,5) from left to right

Lately, I've been inspired by prints of all different kinds. In high school, I was the girl that wore funky vintage prints. I scoured thrift stores for printed polyester (eeeks!) shirts and bell bottoms. Yes, I was THAT girl. And yes, I matched them with my doc martens - hey, they're making a come back! I liked vintage prints because they were different and unique. I knew no one would have them which made it even more special.

Like most girls, I looooove dresses. To my delight, printed dresses are EVERYWHERE. The combination is bad for my wallet. But, a girl can dream, can't she? I did, however, purchase quite a few dresses from Anthropologie and ModCloth during the holiday season. I always justify it as... "It's a holiday dress" or "this would be great for date night". And it is, I promise.

Above are a few I'm swooning over... especially Anthropologie's Bike Lane Dress (upper left). I'm keeping my fingers crossed for when it goes on sale... well, IF it goes on sale. Le sigh. For now, I'll dream of prints. =)

Project 52: Week 1

My little word for 2012 is forward. You can read more about why I chose this word here. 2012 is upon us and I can feel change is coming. Positive changes. I'm excited. There are so many things I want to do, so many places I want to explore. I think that's what I learned the most about 2011 - explore and follow your heart. So forward I go.

Last week was my first trip to Mammoth. When I tell people I went to Mammoth with no intention is ski or snowboard, they are dumbfounded. All I can do is say, "snow and I don't mix well". Let me take this moment to elaborate... about 10 years ago, my friends and I decided to try skiing. After a tremendous and humiliating fall upon my arrival on the ski lift, our instructor shows us how to go down the bunny slope. My friend and I go down the slope and collide, attached at the arms, and ski directly into the lovely pile of mud that saved our fall. The instructor's 9 year-old daughter skies toward us and demands us to get up. She informs me, "I started skiing when I was 3 years-old." Umph. That was the beginning and end of my skiing career.

I spent my first week of 2012 exploring. Everything and everywhere. I reconnected with some friends I haven't spoken with in a long time. Had long talks and walks. Breathed in each moment. This week forecasts the same and I'm happy.

My photographer/friends are awesome. I don't know what I would do without their support and encouragement. So, when Joel announced that he would be up for this photo a day challenge, I felt inspired. How does it work? Take a photo each day in 2012 and record it somehow. I chose to record my photos with Instagram and it's so easy! I love the filters and ease of using this app. Just click, choose a filter or not, add a caption (don't forget to add #instagramaday at the end), and upload. It automatically shares it on Facebook for me. Or, you can keep your photos private --- whatever makes you happy. And, the best part??? It's free! =) LOVE LOVE!

one little word.

I sat there in silence for awhile. Our bags packed, dishes washed, beds made. The soft cool breeze flowed in from the window in front of me. Curious, I stood up, walked to the window, and looked out. The morning sun created a cast against the asphalt below. It stopped right before our truck; the shadows of branches swayed teasingly against the license plate. The street was silent compared to the roar of yesterday's New Year activities. No more fireworks, noisemakers, or bottles of bubbly littering the ground. Instead, the street was abandoned except for a few cars and the neighborhood cat.

Realizing we were leaving soon, I sat back down on the bed in silence again.

I wasn't ready.

Moments passed.

I closed my eyes. The cool breeze felt different this time. Instead of beckoning me, it felt fresh and new. The anticipation of a new year flowed through me and told to move forward. Telling me I'd be OK - just push forward. For all the unexpected, incredible, good, and bad things that happened in the past year, it was time to push forward. Never to forget and always remember.

Look forward. To this year and the next and the next... there is always a moment to look forward to.

Helllllllo, Mammoth!

Paul & I rang in 2012 in Mammoth with a few of our friends. This was my first time there and I concluded a few things:

1. I need to purchase actual snow boots or hiking boots. I wore my cute brown leather boots and after walking in the snow, my feet were FREEZING.
2. Off-roading on ice is OK, really.
3. High-heels and snow don't mix. Especially the peep-toe kind. See #1.

Mammoth was fun and I was sad to leave. But, the new year was upon us... 2012, BRING IT!

While the guys went snowboarding, Bonnie & I ventured. We also had a yummy lunch at Schat's Bakkery... love the pastries!

The next day, Paul & I packed lunch and went off-roading... the views of Mammoth were AHHHMAZING!

On our way home, we stopped in Bishop for some yummy sandwiches at Raymond's Deli & pastries at Schat's Bakkery... definitely worth it!

Excited for the new year! How did you celebrate? I hope it was fabulous!

An early...

I can't believe it's almost here... 2012. My little word for 2012 was "fun". No matter what happens, no matter how things turn out, just have fun. Looking back, I'm glad I chose that word. It helped me get through some of the most difficult times this year. It helped me cope. It helped me understand the bigger picture --- life is short, have fun, enjoy it. Don't sweat the small stuff.

It has taken me some time to think of what this year's little word would be. A few have crossed my mine but nothing has stuck. I'm sure it'll come to me... maybe during our ride to Mammoth to ring in the new year or while capturing some snowy scenery or enjoying NYE dinner. It'll come. For now, I wait in anticipation for our trip. I haven't been to Mammoth before and it'll be a nice short getaway with Paul and his friends.

Whatever you are doing and wherever you will be, make this new year a memorable one! Thanks so much for reading my ramblings, viewing my work, and being truly awesome. I feel so blessed. See you in 2012!

Project 52: Week 35

Last Monday, we had our first rainy day in December. Living in California, I know I'm pretty spoiled when it comes to gorgeous weather. I love the rain, but not for Christmas, please. I'm accustomed to the kinds of Christmases where it's a lovely 75 degrees out and jackets are optional. Where it's a perfect time to run around the park with just shorts and a tee-shirt on. I love the holidays. It makes me giddy inside. So rain, please don't ruin that. Thanks.

Capturing: Lily & Pablo Day After // Sylmar, CA

Lily & Pablo decided to forgo their wedding attire and do a holiday themed day after session instead. What they didn't forgo was using some of their wedding decorations. A Fun Stop... along the way

Last Friday, Paul & I hit the road to Las Vegas to finish up the renovations on the house my parents purchased. We had completed about 90% of it during my birthday weekend with the help of his two friends. The rest, we decided, would take a weekend to do and this time it would be just the two of us. We were determined. Although this was a last minute excursion, we took the opportunity to have this time together on our own. It was awesome.

Paul always finds little places to eat and explore wherever we go. I don't know how he does it but it always turns out great. This time, he told me we were going to get BBQ sandwiches and to be hungry. Done and done. We drove out for about an hour and stopped at Charlie Brown Farms. Knowing our love for faire food and the like, I knew I was gonna be in for a treat!

Paul had stumbled upon Charlie Brown Farms after a long day working up in Victorville for one of our friends. After we ordered our sandwiches and garlic fries (for me, of course!), we scoured the store. There was so much to see! Vintage candy, soda pop, popcorn... we felt like kids in a candy store!

Paul wasn't too amused with the signs... I thought they were hilarious! =)

Mmmmmmm bacon. We all know, I love me some bacon. Just to let you know, I didn't try it. I would spoil my lunch goshdarnit! And, what a yummy lunch it was...

Little Ginger, you've been with us for over a month and we're both so smitten by you. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is, but I think it might be your ears. You do so many funny things... like pick up my shoe, yes one shoe, and drop it off random places. You howl when you hear fire trucks but not police cars. You sit in between us to let us know you are there and insist that we play with you. You respond happily when he calls you "Fur Bag" or "Baby Girl"... either one seems fine with you. And how can I possibly resist that paw...

Christina & Oliver Engaged // Los Angeles, CA

I had the pleasure of capturing Christina & Oliver after they celebrated their 6 month anniversary. They were one of the first couples I took pictures of. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was so nervous. I jotted down a few poses, remembered to bring an extra lens, and prayed. I showed up at Travel Town 30 minutes before our scheduled time to meet, walked around, and paced back and forth. What if they don't like the pictures? What if they don't like ME? Oy. But, within minutes of shooting, I felt at ease. Their love was wonderful to capture - so genuine and full. I was merely an observer with a camera...

Christina & Oliver, I am so honored you picked me to capture your wedding on June 2, 2012! I can't wait to see all the things you dream up. And, I confess, I've been eye-ing your Pinterest for your wedding inspiration, too! =) Your engagement session was perfect... airplanes, a guitar, & lots of love. Here are a few favorites:

Airplanes have a special place in their hearts... Oliver is about 30 hours away from completing the requirements to get his pilot's license! How awesome is that???

Foto Fun Friday: Date Night

On Thanksgiving, Paul & I went on a movie date night before the Black Friday antics began. We watched one of the last showings for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part I. I must tell you, I read the books. All.of.them. My best friend tried to convince me to read the series, I told him no. My good friend, Marga, tried to convince me, I refused. About a year after that, my friend, Nadia, convinced me, gave me the books, and I couldn't help but read all of them. The books are far better than the movies, as most people attest to.Needless to say, I'm hooked on them despite my unwillingness to read them at first. And, yes, Paul has seen all the movies because of me. He proudly says he's Team Jacob - all the way. Shhhhh... I didn't tell you that.

To make it an extra special night, we watched it at the Archlight Cinerama Dome & bought caramel popcorn. It was our first time in the Cinerama Dome... it's HUGE! We felt like we were in an egg or honeycomb... haha.

When we finished the movie and the credits were rolling, I turned to Paul...

December Daily - The challenge!

What is December Daily? A creative and fun way to document the days leading to Christmas. This project was created by stay-at-home mom turned scrapbook queen, Ali Edwards. Every year, I hesitate. I look at her lovely layouts, pictures, and concepts and I instantly feel defeated. Why? Because of all the preparation it takes. In the ideal situation, I would have laid down the "foundation pages", scheduled some time during my day to work on it, figured out my photo printing situation, and bought a really nice camera bag that didn't look like a camera bag so I can carry my back-up camera EVERYWHERE. After some thought and inspiration from my friends (Anna & Christina V.), I decided to scale it down and make it for ME. In looking at other crafty bloggers, such as Amy, I realized there were no rules and I was making them for myself. So, I'm going with it! Rolling with the punches! EEEEKS!

After a clean up in the craft supplies, I gathered items I already had on hand and added a few more for inspiration...

1. Fun inks
2. Journaling cards by Becky Higgins. IF I get through December Daily, I would like to start Project Life. It's crazy and awesome. Really, it's crazy awesome. And yes, I've already purchased a few things for my Project Life project... just in case. =) And, of course some baker's twine... I have some ideas of how I will incorporate this.
3. Instax 7s - This was a Christmas gift from my sisters last year. It IMMEDIATELY solved my photo printing situation. I will still carry my back-up camera for big moments, i.e. get-togethers, dinners, etc., but will carry the Instax 7s on a daily basis.
4. Cricut - ooooo how I love theeeee. Paul bought this for me a few years ago and since then, I've acquired a few cartridges. I especially love these! I will use them when I have to create little embellishments for the pages. Not a requirement, but a nice to have if time allows.
5. Woodgrain stamp - so simple and so fun when creating layers and foundations in my scrapbook pages.
6. Washi tape - what an addiction! There are so many to choose from! The best part? A great decorative adhesive for my Instax photos. I bought some here and here.
7. Christmas paper pack - After the holidays and the rush of sales two years ago, I went to Michael's on a whim. Lo and behold, there was a bin of assorted paper packs for $4! Madness... I grabbed a few.
8. Stamp set - Oh, Martha, you did it again! I love how I can create my own stamps... genius!
9. 6x6 acrylic album - I went with Anna to a mini book class and purchased another book for fun. When I was going through my craft supplies, I stumbled upon it and a couple others. Its the perfect size and shape.
10. Date stamp - Isn't that the whole point in documenting? I love this stamp A LOT and use it in a variety of pages. I purchased mine at Staples but this is a good alternative for the price.

And, in a recent holiday vintage sale excursion, I purchased this basket to hold everything in. Sooo perfect!

Project 52: Week 33

A week or so ago, I shot two family sessions at Griffith Park. Griffith Park is where I train for all my marathons and I am easily mesmerized by all the horses walking to and fro. Whenever they pass, thoughts of taking some photos with them pass thru my mind. Fortunately, on this particular lovely Sunday, I had my chance! I initially asked two horseback riders and they refused... but the third times the charm! This beaut let me do my thing and I was able to capture a couple of frames.

So, yes, I will do anything for THE shot. The shot that plays in my mind until I execute it. The challenge has very just rewards.

Capturing: A Tea Party Hosted By First Pick Planning

Since I've started my business, I've had the best luck meeting and collaborating with so many awesome people. Last month at The Everything Wedding Show, Jen from First Pick Planning stopped by my booth and chatted up with my team. Unfortunately, I wasn't there at that moment, but when I came back, my team couldn't stop talking about how nice she was. The following week, we connected over garlic fries in Downtown Los Angeles and talked about everything and anything. She told me she wanted to put together a launch party for her business - a tea party to be exact. And, what a fun tea party it was! Alongside Krystal from Stella and Dot, it was a great afternoon for meeting new friends, fun treats, and some fabulous accessories! Here are a few pictures from the day...

Capturing: Accomplishment

When my dad passed away, my whole life changed and I took a week off from my training season. I showed up for a training run the following week. I surprised some of my team, my coaches, and myself, really. I needed to do it - for my dad. A month of training went by and it hit me... like a ton of bricks. 13.1 miles of bricks. Plus leading my awesome team. Plus a recurring injury. Oy. But, I NEEDED to do it. This determination to complete it pushed me along. Also, the feeling he was watching proudly over me. It was worth it. Here are a few pictures from the expo:

On to the next... TINKERBELL HALF MARATHON!

Capturing 30 - bits and pieces

They say 30 is the new 20... but, really, 30 just feels so different. Calming, actually. I celebrated my 30th birthday in Las Vegas with close family and friends. It's hard to celebrate, to be honest with you. My dad and I have the same birthday and this time, there was only my name on the birthday cake. What I do appreciate the most were the family and friends who came out. To eat cake and remind me the importance of celebrating every moment. Needless to say, I'm exhausted! =) Here are a few bits and pieces of my 30th birthday weekend... starting with a nice birthday dinner at The Wicked Spoon in The Cosmopolitan Hotel:

EEEEKKKKKKS! Today is my 30th birthday! I loooove birthdays! I know, then why the picture? Because it's classic & I heart it.a.lot. My mom sat me next to my cake and I think I had enough of it. But, before taking me down, she took a picture. There was a picture of me smiling happily next to it but it didn't seem to last too long. Each of my sisters has a picture of us sitting next to our 1st birthday cake. It's tradition. I love it.

Wow! I can't believe it's been a year since I sat down to write these goals. 16 out of 29 isn't bad. I'm absolutely happy with it. I'll write my 30 things before 31 soon. Some things will stay on the list, others will go. One thing's certain - I'm going to keep this list going! My biggest accomplishment? Opening my photography business... taking that risk has been so scary and rewarding at the same time. It feels so great to be in a different spot in my life compared to last year. On to the next!

Project 52: Week 31

I found a couple of CDs last week... I wasn't sure what was on them - no label, shame on me! After I popped them in my DVD drive, I was pleasantly surprised. They were pictures. Old pictures from my first point-and-shoot Nikon digital camera. I looked at them with mixed emotions. Some of them were from birthdays past, trips taken together, random outings. I looked at my transformation the last short 4 years... how different I am now. How clearer I see things than before... the trivial of things aren't so trivial now. Things so important then are not so much now. As my birthday approaches, I can't help but reminisce on my twenties. Oh my twenties, you were good to me... I partied like a rock star while keeping my head on straight, took a lot of risks and failures, and saw parts of the world beyond what were in the books. Thirties? I could only wish for so much more... and, I can't wait.

I had such a great time at The Everything Wedding Show today! Along with chatting up with so many awesome vendors, I met some of the most beautiful brides and their handsome fiances. I had a great time talking about their wedding plans, how they met their husbands-to-be, and even, marathons! Phew!

Five Things I Love Right Now

October is my birthday month. I love everything about it - the weather, the smells, the sounds. October motivates me... it inspires me to write down some goals for the next year and make a plan of attack. And, while in front of my computer, I can't help but scour my favorite daily reads & also do some online window shopping. Here are five things I'm absolutely LOVING right now...

1. Skirts & dresses... I love dresses in the fall. I guess because I can layer, layer, layer and things just turn out so pulled together & cute!

5. Wedding messages... this is so sweet and clever! During the rehearsal dinner, a friend passes out blank cards for everyone to write marital advice for the bride & groom. Then, s/he will divide the cards into piles and put them into envelopes. The envelopes will indicate when the bride & groom can open them, i.e. 1 year anniversary, 12 year anniversary, and so on. What a nice gift!

Bouvier & Erik Engaged // Downtown Los Angeles Engagement

They met at a college mixer. She was the president of her sorority and he didn't believe her. They talked throughout the night and he kept encouraging her to party with him. She declined; she took her duties seriously. They became friends and talked for days afterward. She was with someone at the time and being friends was all they could be. Time passed and they continued to talk. She became single. He took the chance. And, many dates later, he asked. This time, she didn't decline to be with him forever.

Bouvier & Erik, thanks so much for letting me capture your love. I had a great time exploring downtown LA with you! Here are a few of my favorites images, starting with Union Station:

Run it, Run it

I was never a great runner. Growing up, I was the last runner of the pack and squeaked by with a "B" in P.E. Yes, a "B". When I tell people this, they don't believe me... "A 'B' in P.E.? Who does that?" I did. I was the kid who showed up on time to class in her P.E. uniform and participated in the games but received the "B". Why? Because I didn't run fast enough. I attribute it to the hours spent in front of the TV watching MTV music videos everyday and eating all that delicious Filipino food. But really, I couldn't make the mark when it came to running based on the California state standards. I tried one semester, but all it did was make me realize how big of a NON-runner I am - wait, is that even a word? So, when I started high school, I played varsity tennis instead - a small court makes for a happy, slow runner. =)

In addition to all that, I was a chubby kid. (I'll save those photos of my childhood for later.). So, no running meant more weight and more weight meant no running. Throughout my college years, the weight didn't get any better until one day I decided to stop the madness. The gym became my friend but I still didn't run. I tried to fight genetics as much as I could but I plateaued. There was only so much Turbo Kick Boxing and Yoga I could take. Then, a friend told me she did Triathlons and I was inspired. I looked up the next half marathon in Los Angeles and joined an amazing running group. What I learned and appreciated from my running group was that there was no standard. I was told, "run at your pace and have a great time doing it." So, I did and it snowballed. I've done a couple of full marathons, half marathons, and a triathlon. And, I did it in my own terms. Of course, I trained and trained hard but there was no one there to tell me I wasn't good enough. It was quite the opposite.

I train a group now within the same running group. I look back at where I started and I'm so grateful for them. Running great distances is such a large feat, I don't know how I would've gotten through without them. In three weeks, some members of my group will run their first half marathon - the Los Angeles Rock and Roll Marathon on October 30th. As much as they tell me I inspire them, they inspire me. I can't wait to cross the finish line with them. And, we'll continue to run until next year for the 2012 Los Angeles Full Marathon and Pasadena Half Marathon. Check it out ---> USA Marathon Training. Five Photography Tips On How To Capture Babies

Disclaimer: I am providing these tips based on my own personal experience. This tutorial is to help anyone who wants a few tips on how to capture their little ones. This is not a comprehensive list. No fancy schmancy camera is needed. Bring out your point & shoot and just have fun!

More and more of my friends are having little bundles of joy. During some of my portrait sessions, I am asked what type of camera would be a great one for their families to have to capture their little ones. My follow up question to that is typically, what are you going to do with it? Pictures only? Video? Both? Do you plan on shooting manually eventually? What does your budget look like? Oh the list goes on... And then I ask what they have now... because, at the end of the day, it's what is captured vs. how elaborate the camera is. It's amazing with just a few tips what can be captured with any camera!

Place your adorable baby near a large window or open up some curtains in the house. The gorgeous light will illuminate the room. Do not use flash. This will keep baby as happy and comfortable as can be. In the above picture, the light was coming from camera right about 4-5 feet away. The windows brought in so much light as it was in the middle of the day. Baby Zachary was comfie and ready for his close up!

Crop it & don't forget the details - baby's arms, legs, feet. I love to take pictures of a baby's little feet & hands because they're so squishy and small. Details, details, details. In the above picture, I cut out a felt heart to put alongside baby Nala to add some interest to the picture while capturing her tiny hand.

Get down to their level. Doing so will make them come more alive in their picture, i.e. they won't look so small. In this shot, Nala is placed directly in front of me while I shoot on my belly.

Check your camera's settings to see if there is a "continuous shooting" feature. Capturing baby's funny faces and sweet smiles can be difficult. With continuous shooting, you'll have better opportunities to capture them!

Capturing babies can be difficult so take your time and have fun with it! Most newborn portrait sessions I do run almost 2 hours with the changing, feeding, sleeping... the list goes on. I always make a point to have FUN during the process because baby is the boss! =)

Foto Fun Friday: Pig Love

During our trip to the LA County Fair, we stopped by the farm to see the cute little bunnies, baby goats, and piglets. A crowd was forming around this adorable family of pigs. The mommy pig was burrowing in the dirt and I wasn't sure what she was doing. She just kept burrowing and doing her thing. She paid no attention to any of the piglets or daddy pig. When she was done burrowing, she plopped herself next to daddy pig happy as can be. Then, the piglets rushed to the both of them for warmth. I couldn't help but take a picture...

I especially like the piglet in the middle of mommy and daddy. Then, they all shut their eyes and went to sleep. Ahhhhh love!

Our Tradition: The LA County Fair

Since we started dating in 2005, Paul and I have made a tradition of going to the Renaissance Fair & LA County Fair every year. I always love going! There's just so much to see, eat, and enjoy. We went to the fair a few weeks ago. Here are a few of my favorites:

I purchased the dress from a vintage pop shop sale... so comfie! And, my favorite carnival treat - caramel apples! Yum!

I tried to convince Paul to win a Hello Kitty plushie for me... after seeing all these other boyfriends fail, we decided to save our money instead for some carnival treats.

In loving memory...

September 16, 2011 will forever be etched in my mind. It was the day my dad passed away. His death was sudden and quick. He died of a massive heart attack. I can't express to you the emotions I feel inside. All I can tell you is that life is short and uncertain - make each moment count. Say what you need to say, love the way you want to love, live as if it were your last.

I spent a day writing his eulogy... it was such a difficult task. What do I say? How do I honor him? It was the toughest speech I've ever written or delivered. But, I did it... through a lot of tears and support from my family & friends...

"Smart.Funny. Amazing cook. Great storyteller. Loved to laugh. Sports fanatic.Independent. These are some of the qualities my dad had on the surface… thingswe knew about him and appreciated. Looking back at my childhood through thepresent, my dad possessed so much more than what was on the surface. He waseverything a daughter could have wanted in a father – supportive, fair, kind,generous, understanding, honest.

RogelioAlmacen Beduya was born in Danao, Cebu on October 21, 1945. He was the youngestof Galicano and Cipriana’s four children. When he was younger, he loved tosocialize with his family and friends. He also wanted to have a family & soughtguidance from his elders. With the help of his sister, Sheila, he obtained aMechanical Engineering degree at Cebu Institute of Technology. He then workedat Danao Apocement as a Mechanical Engineer. After two years, his elderbrother, Joe, asked that he work in Manila as a Sales Engineer for Briggs andStratton. He travelled extensively throughout the Philippines promoting theirproducts. After five years, he quit his job so his brother, Joe, could work asa manager for Briggs and Stratton. Subsequently, he went back to his hometownof Danao. A week later, he went to visit his eldest brother, Dr. EribertoBeduya, who was the director of the Minglanilla hospital where my mother,Sonia, was also working. Rogelio saw Sonia and approached George Camposano (themedical technologist). Rogelio had noticed Sonia before and asked George to dohim a favor by introducing them. So he did. Rogelio attributes their meeting as“God’s will” since he had to quit his job to meet her. About three months later,Joe recommended Rogelio for a sales manager position for another company inanother city. He worked there for two years while maintaining their longdistance relationship. Rogelio visited Sonia every 6 months. After two years,he decided he wanted to marry her. Along with his parents, they visited Sonia& her parents to ask for her hand in marriage. They sealed the deal 3months later on May 9, 1976. As it was difficult to find a job in thePhilippines, he worked abroad in Saudi Arabia as a Mechanical Engineer – goinghome once a year. Sonia wrote to him every day & spoke to him in audiotapes. He worked in Saudi Arabia for five years.

From ayoung age, Rogelio wanted to have a family of his own. Rogelio & Soniawelcomed their first born child, Darah Grace, on December 26, 1976. Theirsecond daughter, Sonia Mae, was born on March 5, 1979. Their youngest daughter,Lizzi Ann, was born on Rogelio’s birthday – October 21, 1981. They all migratedto The United States in 1986.

Dy: I amso lucky. You were the greatest father any child could ask for. You brought meinto this world & taught me so much about life. About family. About what itmeans to be a good daughter, sister, friend, Catholic. You taught me theimportance of education. About a being a good citizen and person. You taught mewhat it means to be strong, to be independent, and to be successful ineverything I did. You set the principles of human character and providedguidance. The biggest most important lesson you taught me was how to reallylove someone. Because you loved us so much. You showed this in your actions –big and small.

I have somany great memories with you… when I got my first car, when I graduated fromcollege, when I learned how to sew, our family trips together, sharing abirthday cake. What plays the most in my mind was a few weeks ago. I came home,opened the door, and you were sitting in our den. I walked over, kissed you onthe forehead, and you smiled. You asked where I went and how I was doing, howmy day went, if there was anything new. You asked about my friends and whatthey were doing. This is how you are. You always check in with me – making sureeverything is OK & I’m happy. You also asked how the wedding I photographedwent. It caught me off-guard and I asked if you wanted to see some of thepictures. We spent some time going over them and I was so excited to share themwith you. You smiled as we looked through and I felt you were really proud ofme.

It’s allthose little things, too, Dy, that made you such an incredible father. You madeus so many delicious meals and packed us lunches. You visited us during ourtennis matches. You loved to get in political debates with us. You were ourinformant – knowledgeable of all news & history. You had so much to sharewith us.

I knowyou’re in a better place now. Looking down on us and smiling. I know you’llstill be there to guide me and support me. Knowing that, it comforts me. Thankyou for all you have done to make me who I am today. I love you, dad."

I share this because it helps me cope. My blog has always been a venue for me to share and document my life with all its ups and downs. If you've read this far, thank you... it's a lot to take in and I appreciate it.

Today marks the last day of the novena and we will have mass at my house as well. I will be surrounded with love from all my family and friends - near and far. Thank you. To those who've asked about him the past few years, paid respects at his funeral, come to support and help my mom & sisters, sent flowers, baskets, cards, & well-wishes, called just to check in with us, prayed for him, prayed for us, visited us, and so much more - thank you. I continue to be amazed by all the love and support my family & I have received. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

You turn 32 today. This year has been so fast --- with it's up and downs, I can't keep up. You've been so amazing with your support & care of my family and me the last two weeks... I'm lucky.

Today is about you although you say it isn't. "It's just another day," you always say. You insist that we don't have to celebrate it today, but I want to. I want to show that I appreciate you. Today and all the following days after.

Saying 'Bye to Summer + The Future

Wow. It's been awhile. Hi, bloggie blog... how I've missed you and my wonderful readers! The past couple of weeks have been rather hectic. First of all, saying good-bye to summer has been physically tough. When seasons change, my allergies act up. Thinking and hoping it wasn't more than just allergies, I pushed thru only to get sick and then sicker and then out cold. In the middle of wedding season??? Yes, that would be me. But, the short hiatus was a good one... I feel energized & ready to share all the lovely images I have under my belt. Yes, be prepared for some eye candy!

Saying 'bye to summer also has me thinking of where my business is heading... there are so many things to do and not enough time to do them. I'm excited about what the next year will bring and the surprises along the way. Thank you for accompanying me on this journey!

Foto Fun Friday: Just keep running... just keep running.

I train a team of extraordinary people... people who choose to get up and run at 7:00 am on a Saturday. People who have faith, confidence, and will. Individually, they have their own reasons to why they run - to lose weight, to cross something off their list, to raise money for a worthy cause - and together, we train for a common goal. There are may reasons to why I run, but this is why. I'm a firm believer that with discipline and focus, anything is possible. So, when I stumbled upon this picture on Pinterest, I couldn't help but take a picture of it...

I love Jillian Michaels. I understand her story because its similar to mine --- except, I'm not a fitness guru and she sometimes scares me. At the end of the day, she inspires me.

As my Coach Dave would say, have an inspired run! =)

Thrifty on Thursday - Vintage Pop Shop

As I mentioned on this post, my love for vintage was sparked again by one of my beautiful brides. Last weekend, I trekked to Fullerton for a wonderful vintage pop sale. What's a vintage pop sale? A few vendors get together and sell a variety of items. It was neat to see so many vendors there with their one-of-a-kind finds. I didn't expect to purchase anything, but within minutes of entering Studio EMP, I was smitten by all things magical in there. First off, were these set of five chairs.for.25.dollars. Yes, you heard me - $25 for FIVE CHAIRS! After a long debate with the boyfriend, we decided to pass. They were weathered down a bit and meant to go outside. They were a steal though and looking back, I'm glad we didn't get them.Why? Because I knew they weren't exactly what I wanted and they would take up a lot of storage space.

I did leave with a few things - this really cool ammunition box for Paul and a wooden garden box for me...

... and I am so super excited about the treasures I found at Ruche! They are one of my favorite online stores and couldn't believe they were at the sale... and a sale it was! I negotiated a super deal on these and can't wait to wear them.

Project 52: Week 28

It has taken me awhile to even write this post. To sum it up, last week was pretty rough. I don't really know where to begin. For those who have known me throughout the years, you can attest to my "busy-ness"... I'm on the go doing things, many things at once. While the world sleeps, I'm up at dawn starting my day. Funny thing is, I can't imagine my life any other way.

Last Tuesday, I felt pressure - not from anything in particular, just this overwhelming realization of all the things I have on my plate. So yes, the "pressure" was the thing I was putting on myself. I started looking through some past images. The one above played clearly in my mind. I saw this couple as Paul & I were driving through Pismo Beach this year. We passed them initially and I told Paul to slow down. I shot this over my right shoulder from the passenger seat of the truck. The reason I was so intent in capturing it was for it's simplicity. There they were walking on the beach... a little family of three. I wanted to know their story. I was curious to know what they were talking about or if they were talking about anything at all. I remember thinking, they'd want this image some day. So, if they look familiar to anyone reading this - HOLLER at me! =)

Their simplicity told me to breathe, just breathe. And, to slow things down a little, if I could. I plan to.

Lily & Pablo Engaged // Wilson Park Engagement

When I first met Lily & Pablo, we clicked right away. I couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was at that time, but it was something... something special. I knew we were going to be fast friends - especially since Lily & I are both inspired by the same crafty bloggers! As I started to know them more, I found out we share the same love for all things vintage, arts & crafts, yummy Thai food, and long distance running.

Before I shoot an engagement session, I brainstorm with the couple about the things they like to do and where. I then visualize how we would bring all the elements that define them into place. I was so excited when Lily shared with me their Save-The-Date pictures (a magical fort of fun) and some of the ideas they had. Their engagement session is a true reflection of who they are as a couple. The items we used are all theirs - curated from past vintage outings. These items will eventually decorate their new home together.

Lily & Pablo, thank you so much for choosing me to be your photographer. I am so excited to shoot your wedding in a couple of weeks! I am even more excited of the vintage thrifting trips and Thai food we will have in the future! Here are a few of my favorite images...

Foto Fun Friday: Consumed

It all started with Bearstain Bears. I remember my early childhood reading book after book after book. Their series consumed me. Growing up, I loved to read anything and everything... lots of R.L. Stine, Jane Austen, and the Babysitter's Club. Oh and yes, I did feel I could start up my own babysitting service at the age of 9. These books inspired me. They empowered me - a little girl with a lot of dreams and a big vision.

Lately, I've been reading a lot of photography books with a few business books thrown here and there. They remind me of my college days - books on marketing, economics, etc. etc. But in this case, I actually ENJOY reading these books and there's no final at the end... PHEW! I'll let you know how it goes...

Project 52: Week 27

My love for thrifting started in high school. My sisters and I would spend hours scouring thrift stores all over the Valley and Hollywood for fun flowered shirts, dresses, & bell bottoms. My sister even bought her prom dress there --- so cute! It was always so neat to find a cute outfit no one had - one of the many reasons I love vintage.

Since high school, I've gone thrifting here and there mostly for furniture, books, belts, and clothes. I would go randomly by myself if I happen to pass by a neat thrift store or was feeling lucky. One of my brides thrifted a lovely dress for me (blog post on that soon!) recently and this sparked a few thrifting adventures since then. One thing's certain, the madness of thrifting hasn't changed one bit. It's all about the hunt for the perfect item, all the hidden treasures, and surprises around every corner. During a particular thrifting adventure, I saw this unassuming cabinet. I didn't think much of it until...

I opened it. It was amazing! Vintage notions, spools of thread, pin cushions... it was out of control. I love crafts and seeing this was so inspiring. I wondered who had it before it got here... maybe a little ol' lady who took up sewing when she was younger. I wondered how old the thread must be and what she made with it. How long it must have taken for her to collect all her supplies. How her quilts must've looked. How many half projects she has (because I have a pile of them too!). I was *THIS CLOSE* to purchasing it. The cabinet was rather large and I didn't know where to put it... also, vintage thread is good to collect (I have a few in a jar at home) but using it to sew is a gamble. If the thread is no good, it may not hold up a dress or bag for too long. I walked away and started to search for her sewing machine... sadly, I didn't find it anywhere. I left empty handed but truly inspired.

Adriana & Gera Married // The Ebell Los Angeles

Every time I leave a wedding, I feel inspired and hopeful. Watching a couple commit their lives together inspires me to be a better partner, listener, compromiser, and friend. Adriana & Gera have been through everything together. It's amazing to see a what a chance meeting at a bus stop almost 15 years ago blossom into love and companionship.

Adriana & Gera, you taught me so much about love. True love. Beyond just between the two of you... the unconditional love you both show to your family and friends. With whole hearts and lots of laughter, too. You welcomed me with open arms and I'm so appreciative. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Ready to take on the world! Muscles and all. I'm building my strength and ready to conquer anything. I feel empowered. It's times like these I feel like taking so many risks and am everywhere all at once. It's a crazy feeling... I kinda like it.

Project 52: Week 26 --- half way there!

I LOOOOOOVE to dance! Any song, any reason... really! I don't discriminate. I can throw down a mean electric slide and shuffle. Throughout my junior high & high school days, Paula Abdul & Janet Jackson were my idols. I would try to mimic the moves from the music videos on MTV in the privacy of my own room, of course. So, when this song came on, I grabbed my bride to dance with me. This song brings so many fun memories and I loved that Stephanie captured it. I just laugh looking at it - and, the best part? My bride is, too.

Shhhhh... I have a confession. I've dreamed of having twins - yes, twins. There's something so sweet and special about having a best friend and sister for life. To share everything with - birthdays, secrets, and more. When I first met Claire and Megan, my heart melted. Not only were they so squishy and cute, they had such great personalities and a little spunk.

Foto Fun Friday: Walking on Sunshine

I love hot weather. Wait, let me clarify... I love California hot weather. It's dry with some cool breezes. That's what it feels like right now. I usually run or walk in the middle of the day. That's basically the only time I have to hit the pavement. To me, it's perfect... the sun isn't so scorching and I get a lil' tan.

During a special walk/talk/catch up session I had with my best friend, we stopped to "smell the roses". In this case, I spotted this lovely...

So unassuming... just waiting for her picture to be taken. I love having my iPhone handy for moments like these. Nothing fancy, just on the fly and so pretty.

David & Christina Married // Caltech, Pasadena, CA

I've never walked the Caltech campus until a couple of weekends ago. Walking the grounds, I can see why it is so dear to David & Christina. The campus is so beautiful and had such amazing light! And, on that Saturday they exchanged vows, the weather could not be anymore perfect. I'm really blessed to have met so many great photographers turned friends - especially Sarina from Sarina Love Photography. Not only was I fortunate enough to second shoot for her, she also told me the wedding served everyone unlimited tacos AND ice cream! Deal and DEAL!

Project 52: Week 25

My friends and I have remained close for over 15 years. It's so amazing to be part of their life milestones and have them be part of mine. While my best friend was in town, we went to visit the newest addition to our clan - Baby Zachary. Zachary is the newborn son of our friends, Katie and Roger. And, what a cutie he is! I couldn't help but be in awe of him. He's is so precious.

Capturing: Cherry & Doug Engaged // Pasadena Engagement

Cherry and I go wayyyyy back. Back to when baggy pants and shirts were cool. We were hip Junior High kids, for sure. We kept in touch throughout the years and with the help of facebook, we were able to get together for this session.
